In Central Indiana, we are fortunate to have identified a number of industry sectors that drive our region’s economy, and have formed robust partnerships to support continued growth.
These wealth driving sectors, including advanced manufacturing, logistics, life sciences, technology and alternative energy, are continually challenged to find skilled talent to fill current job openings. This is a national issue and a pronounced and growing reality in Central Indiana.
EmployIndy is leading an effort called Hire Up Indy that is examining the technical skills gap in Central Indiana and creating an actionable and measurable plan to help develop the right employees, with the right skills to support our region’s wealth driving industries.
Comprised of industry executives and civic and education leaders, Hire Up Indy is hard at work gathering and analyzing data to understand the breadth and depth of the region’s skills gap in key wealth driving sectors. It recently released a report that clearly outlines industry needs and provides focus to the real demand for technical skills: The region’s growth industries make up 40 percent of Central Indiana’s private sector and, based on real-time job postings, a majority of those industries require high-skill, technical workers with post-secondary degrees or credentials.
Additional analysis are underway to delve into how our regional and statewide secondary and postsecondary institutions are preparing individuals to meet these industry needs. Taken together, these data will help pinpoint the misalignment between industry needs and educational output in terms of graduates in technical fields. These data, in addition to valuable and practical insight from Central Indiana leaders, are helping to inform Hire Up Indy as it develops solutions.
